There are literally hundreds of different diets out there right now each of them promising great weight loss results. The harshreality is, nothing will work if you don't stick with it long enough. So why is it that you are craving sugar and carbohydrates all the time? Why do you feel out of control with these unhealthy foods? Are you going crazy? The truth is, eating sugar and processed carbohydrates creates a viscous cycle that always leaves us wanting more! Here are the main reasons you literally can’t stop eating sugar.
HIDDEN SUGARS
It doesn't have to be ice cream to contain as much sugar as dessert. Sadly sugars are added to most processed foods, we have to remember food manufacturers don’t just create a new product and hope you like it, they carefully design to perfect sweet spot to tantalise the taste buds making you want to buy more, a healthy bank balance being their only driver!
ITS ADDICTIVE
The brain uses more energy than any other organ in the human body and glucose is its primary source of fuel. But when the brain is exposed to an excessive amount of sugars impairs both our cognitive skills and our self-control. Sugar (salty and fatty foods) like other drugs activate the reward centres of the brain driving the loss of self-control, overeating, and subsequent weight gain. The reason for the reward system in the brain is ultimately a primal survival drive that in early humans helped lead towards calorie dense food sources when meals were scarce. It has been discovered that foods that have a higher GI response, so those that raise our blood sugar quickly activate these reward systems in the brain more so that those with a low GI, meaning that they create a more addictive drive! In the same way that drug addicts need more and more of a substance to achieve the same high, studies have shown the same is also true for sugar! Overtime the rewards diminished meaning just one bar of chocolate no longer cuts it!
STRESS & DEPRIVATION
Possibly the most important aspect is our emotional relationship with these foods. You may decide to go on a health kick and quit the sweet stuff and you do really well for a time, then something happens. Work stress, the kids, PMS and we find ourselves knee deep in a tub of Ben and Jerrys. Our relationship with food is often distorted and we find ourselves relying on sugar to lift us out of the funk we are in!
